I realize this is trivial next to Wizz's loss, but here it is. We lost our little dog today.
Thursday she seemed okay when we went to see her at the Internal Medicine clinic. She walked with us, took food from us (chicken and tuna fish), and seemed to be doing all right. She was a bit spacey but after all she'd been through it seemed reasonable. Friday morning when I called the vet said he was worried, that she'd regressed, wouldn't stand, wouldn't walk, wouldn't eat or drink, wouldn't interact with them at all. I thought maybe she was just depressed about being there, that she missed us. When I called again that afternoon he said she hadn't changed, but there wasn't anything else they could do for her and maybe coming home would perk her up a little. Sounded fine to me -- I figured she missed us and the other dogs. I've been hospitalized myself and I know that no matter how excellent the care is, eventually you just want to go home.
So yesterday I picked her up and brought her home. And it was clear almost immediately that it was pretty much over. She seemed to know there was someone with her but I don't think she knew who we were. She refused to eat or drink. The only things I could get in her were what I gave her no choice about -- scraping Nutrical onto her teeth and giving her water from an eyedropper. If she could spit it out, she would. She wouldn't even take chicken, and she loves chicken. She was restless all night, moving her legs like she was trying to get up. When I picked her up and set her on her feet, unless I supported her she fell over. When I held her up her head kept twitching to the right. She was incontinent, and I put a towel under her and changed it out when it got wet, so at least she stayed dry.
When my husband came home from work this morning (he's on nights at the moment), I told him I thought it was time to let her go. She might have lasted awhile longer, but -- I know this sounds odd -- she wasn't really there anymore. Apparently the brain damage from the seizures was worse than even the vet thought, and that doesn't show up on the MRI. Our vet here gave her an anaesthetic to put her in a deep sleep, since he thought he might have trouble finding a vein for the final shot, so I think the transition wasn't so bad for her.
So, she's gone to be with her mother and "brother." The SPCA is doing a special cremation and I'm going to pick up her ashes Monday afternoon and scatter them over the back yard.
I just wish her last few days hadn't been so hard.

Hi Fan, Sorry to hear that, things seemed to be really looking up on Wednesday. I hope you were at least able to feel you had the opportunity to say goodbye to her.
We're all here for you, if you or Wizz need a shoulder or an ear. Both of you should know if you need anything from any of us, you have but to ask
Sorry to hear this, Fan. And, in my opinion, it's not trivial. It's the loss of a life that was close to you. Believe me, I understand (and am sorry for) your loss.

Sorry for your loss Fan. Human, Dog or otherwise..it is still a loss to the heart. I grieve with thee.

Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, every single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen-had to be a girl.
We should've known. Only women, while pregnant, would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.
